BIOGRAPHY

  • Jan Epitacio is a licensed minister of the UPCI and the Deaf Pastor at Family Worship Center in American Canyon, CA. Bro. Jan was born in the Philippines and moved to the USA when he was very young.

    He signs fluently in ASL. He also serves as Western District Deaf Ministry coordinator (Northern California and Nevada). He works as a courier for Federal Express. During his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, running, and lifting weights.

  • Bro. Curtis Noland have been in the Deaf Ministry for over 30 years and have been deaf since birth. He was baptized in 1981 and received the Holy Ghost in 1989. Taught our Deaf Bible Class on Sunday mornings since 1997. He became an evangelist in 1991, and have been blessed to have taught many bible studies, and preach across the United States and in other countries.

  • We welcome Kyle Noland from Elk Grove, California joining us to teach our Advanced Sign Class. He has been interpreting professionally for about 12 years. Most of his experience comes through educational and religious interpreting, along with some video relay interpreting. Kyle is an avid coffee drinker and reader, and love all things history. He has gone back to school recently and studying to get a degree in Christian Ministries.

    He is the son of deaf parents Rev. Curtis and Diane Noland from California. Kyle comes with exceptional skills to help any aspiring or seasoned interpreter meet their potential.

  • Robin Fertado Epitacio started her journey in the Deaf community by learning sign language in 1998. She graduated from Ohlone College’s Interpreter Preparation Program in 2003 and became RID certified in 2006. She served as a member-at-large for her local RID chapter, NorCRID, 2004 to 2006. She continues to serve by teaching workshops, and mentors interns from Interpreter Training Programs.

    She currently works in a variety of venues such as video-relay, post-secondary education and community interpreting. Besides her work in the secular arena, Robin remains true to her passion for church interpreting. Her objective is to enhance the quality of the church interpreter and consequently advance Deaf Ministries nationwide.

  • Sheri Arthur has worked as a nationally certified interpreter in the community for more than 25 years specializing in medical, mental health, educational interpreting.

    She also has over 15 years of experience interpreting VRS and VRI. Sheri enjoys working with the Deaf/Blind community and has done tactile interpreting for many years as well. Sheri learned ASL at the age of 13 at college after a year of tenaciously requesting access to ASL classes. She continued to learn ASL from the Deaf community and started working as an interpreter at the age of 17.

    Sheri received her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Over the years, Sheri has mentored many interpreters from the community and ITPs. She is currently working as a Lead Interpreter for Marion County School District as well as working in the community. Sheri continues to impact the community with her interpreting skills and by teaching other interpreters her vast knowledge.

  • Kim Hathaway has worked in the Deaf community for more than 20 years. She was blessed to be ”homegrown” by the Gainesville Deaf community and learned sign language as an adolescent. A year into learning ASL, she started religious interpreting at 16 years of age. Kim specializes in education and religious interpreting.

    She worked for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind in the past and now interprets for DHH students in mainstream schools. Her passion is working with minimal language children and helping children to build language connections, gain understanding and achieve access to the world around them. She has an EIPA score of 4.4 and is currently completing her last year of her Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology. Kim has taught several workshops in the past regarding religious interpreting.

Grounded: Faith & Love is our Annual Deaf Conference for those who want to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. This conference is open to Deaf and Hearing. Through this conference you will gain new depths in your understanding and experience with the Lord. Our Deaf ministers, who preach and teach by God’s divine inspiration, will bolster your faith and love through their dynamic ministry.

Interpreters and signers will grow in signing skills through the classes we’ve organized with our talented Deaf community. Within our event there are many opportunities to fellowship and learn. If you are looking for an event where you will meet new people in our Deaf community – this event is for you!


CEU certificates are available!

CEUs will be given to those that attend the advanced and intermediate classes. Each Interpreter that attends the workshop of your choice will be given a total of 0.4 credits for the day. We will have a RID sign-in sheet for both classes as well as a survey to discuss the attended classes to be returned to RID at the end of the workshop.

Have you ever interpreted a treasure map? How about a timeline in History? Maybe the story in the Bible where Jesus walked on water? What about the Christmas song “Go Tell It On The Mountain”? Yes?! Then you have used discourse mapping! Discourse mapping is an essential part of an interpreter’s interpreting process. This process creates a mental map of information, relationships, or connective ideas in your interpreted message.

Now, be honest, did you struggle to interpret the information clearly using 3D space? You’re not alone!

Often many interpreters struggle with utilizing and recalling 3D space. Our goal is to help you understand how you process information cognitively and this will help you identify how you think and process information via visuals/text, written mapping, and then producing an interpreted message. We want you to have a better understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, and to enhance your current skill level. Come and join us in the intermediate class! Where we will learn how to effectively discourse map!
